The Gepetto Files quilt
My brother-in-law Ted Talvitie is the crazy artist in the family. The majority of Ted's time, money, blood, sweat and tears is poured into developing and promoting "The Gepetto Files," a Rock & Roll Puppet Show (NOT for kids!) that we hopefully will be seeing on TV someday soon. Since he so frequently creates special hand-made gifts for other people, I hoped maybe he'd appreciate a handmade quilt from me; and since the puppet show is such a big part of Ted's life, I wanted my quilt to pay tribute to the show as well as to Ted.
Here is the full view of the finished result. The character on the left is Goward, one of Ted's first (and dearest) puppets. In the Gepetto Files universe, Goward is a paranoid boy who locks himself in his basement bunker, where his only companion is the spider depicted in the upper right. In this quilt, Goward is depicted holding strings that control an image of Ted himself, posing the question that we who know Ted often ask... "Who really controls who???"

I started by grabbing a bunch of pictures of Ted and his puppets off his website then using a projector connected to my computer, I projected the images onto a huge sheet of craft paper (obtained from a Teachers' Supply store). First in pencil, I traced the outline of each image, then later went back over the lines with a Sharpie so they would be easier to trace. This picture shows the traced pattern on my wall, along with some fabric samples I started playing with during the early planning stages.
